I am your teacher - Sally Hook.

I have worked with clay for thiry years and am happy to share myknowledge.   I have a Diploma in Ceramics from the Australian National University's School of Art and have taught ceramic sculpture and mould making in Bellingen's Camp Creative for six years.
I have been fortunate to have had  wonderful learning experiences with clay in France, Italy, Turkey and China, bringing with me the understanding of these cultures and their ceramic heritages.
My work has been exhibited along the eastern seaboard in Australia and has been featured in National ceramic publications - "Journal of Australian Ceramics" and "Australian Ceramics."
THE PROGRAM
  • Breakfast from whenever you want it
  • Work begins at 9 am through to 4 - 5 pm with breaks for morning tea, lunch and afternoon refreshments.
  • Evening drinks (if you enjoy wine, beer, spirits, etc. or healthy juices and smoothies) and nibbles
  • Dinner served around 7 PM.

Longer workshops can include excursions to the beach, the hinterland, gallery towns, etc.

Art Lessons Include:

1)      Ceramic Sculpture
  • Coil Construction - technique used to ensure structures   that are free from cracks and weaknesses.  Coil construction can be used to make hollow, three dimensional forms of almost any design and size.  The sculpture is designed first with a marquette (small version) which is referred to - then be put together in the best manner to form the three dimensional form.
  •  Pinch work - a technique which massages and shapes a ball of clay into a hollow that can then be manipulated to be a part of a larger sculpture or a small object.
  •  Slab Construction - when a design is made from flat slabs, then joined together to form the three dimensional form
  • Segment Construction - when the object is built using unrelated, irregular segments and joined on the inside.
2)     Wheel Work
  • The practices of preparing clay for the wheel, centering, opening up the form, etc. toward a pot of good shape and thickness.  Basic steps take practice, but with repetition, a reasonable number of competant pots are possible within a few hours or days.
3)     Mould Making
  • Making moulds for reproduction in ceramics requires an understanding of  the processes and good design, which will allow the best outcomes.  The steps are to make an object that a mould can be made from, then the bedding in process follows, then the setting up and casting.  The other side is then prepared and poured.  Basics will be demonstrated and the methods undertaken by the student.
4)    Decorating Techniques
  • There are many many ways of decorating ceramics.  You can stamp designs, scratch, paint, apply coloured slips, sgraffito designs, carve, paint, print, add layers to, use fabrics, etc etc etc.    Some of these techniques can be shown depending on the projects undertaken by the student.

5)   Pottery Workshop Processes and Practices
  • Discussions on clays - their diversity and their differing qualities - how and why we use them
  • The use and processes of equipment used
  • Kiln packing and firing
  • Photography and recording your work through digital images
6)  Drawing
  • Observing and recording an object faithfully with a pencil - a study in realism
  • Diversifying images through different approaches to design - a holiday of the mind through drawing
  • Playing around with different techniques using other drawing mediums and materials - getting experimental
  • Life drawing from a live model.
7)  Painting
  • Learning the process of working with acrylics or oil paints - the basics
  • Developing a design for a painting - how to build up an idea, how to approach the canvas.
  • Layering with paint - developing areas of colour and techniques with paint.
  • Portraiture, landscapes, still life's, abstract, expressionist and impressionist approaches can be explored.
